CATFISH HABITAT

Find Catfish Locations That Are Real Honey Holes

What do you look for, to find catfish habitat? Even if you are on a good catfishing river or a good catfishing lake or reservoir, you still have to look for the right spot to fish. Catfish habitat has certain special characteristics that help you locate the honey hole. In our Blog we will name specific locations on a regular basis and we will ask you the readers to tell us about specific catfish habitats. On this page we will give you the information to find your own special catfish location.

As a start, look for places that have sudden drop offs to deep (deeper) water. In deeper bodies of water it may be a drop off from10 or 15 feet to 30 feet or more. In shallow lakes or rivers you may be talking about dropping from 8 foot to 15 or 20 foot. I have caught some good catfish in rivers that were only 2 to 3 feet deep and the drop off holes were only 8 to 10 feet deep. Look for these drop offs where there is at least a mild current. Flowing rivers and streams will have current. The drop offs in lakes and reservoirs are frequently associated with old river or stream beds, where there will be some current.

If the body of water offers a choice, look for these locations where there is a hard bottom, both in the shallower water and the deeper water. If there is rock or pebbles, so much the better. Again, if there is a choice, the shallow water should have some cover, such as stumps, logs, fallen trees, water plants and even human trash (washing machines, cars, 55 gallon drums and sunken boats). I have some great catfish stories that go with each of those items. I will post them in the blog for you. The deeper water should have cover also, such as overhanging ledges, small caverns or holes, water logged timber or trash items like those mentioned above.

The area should be in a quiet place, undisturbed by racing boats, water skiing, personal water craft, or frequent swimming. Surface noise such as road traffic or power plant operations make little difference.

We have just described the perfect catfish habitat. It is exactly what you are looking for. Unfortunately most, or at least many, of the bodies of water do not have all these characteristics available. You just look for as many of these characteristics as you can find. That is exactly what the catfish will do.
